As Accredited Exercise Physiologists we treat a range of people with a variety of health backgrounds, injuries and conditions. Below are some examples of the conditions we come across regularly, and how exercise can help those with each condition.


Exercise, particularly resistance based, can increase bone material and modify several risk factors for osteoporotic fracture, including muscle strength, bone mineral density and balance. Exercise can also reduce the symptoms of arthritis by easing joint pain and stiffness, it also aids joint lubrication, improves flexibility, and builds strength.


Exercise can help manage some of the common side effects of treatment, speed up your return to normal activities, and improve quality of life. For some cancers, exercise may even improve treatment outcomes.


The optimal approach to weight loss is one that combines a mild caloric restriction with regular exercise. Even modest weight loss (5-10% reduction in body weight) is associated with significant health improvements.


Exercise can decrease morbidity and mortality rates associated with the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Exercise improves systolic blood pressure, angina symptoms and exercise tolerance. Exercise training can also improve max heart rate, cardiac output, peak VO2, 6 minute walk test and quality of life.

Exercise is an effective treatment in breaking the deconditioning cycle often seen in respiratory disease and also prevents disability and functional impairment.


Exercise can help restore function which may be compromised due to injury. It can also improve range of motion and strength and endurance in affected muscles or joints as well as reduce pain.


Exercise can improve motor function and reduces or prevents contractures in people with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injury and stroke. Exercise improves quality of life, reduces degradation of muscles, improves movement, prolongs independence and reduces the risk of falls.


The treatment goal for diabetes is glucose control, which includes diet, medications and exercise. Exercise is effective in glucose control because exercise has an insulin-like effect that enhances the uptake of glucose.
